Morris County, TX — January 28, 2024, Juan Eduardo Campos Jr. was killed following a car accident at around 3:30 a.m. along U.S. Highway 67.
According to officials, the incident occurred near U.S. 67 and County Road 3321, between Mt. Pleasant and Naples.

It appears that 30-year-old Juan Campos Jr. was in a Chevy Silverado reportedly going eastbound along U.S. 67. For reasons unclear, the vehicle drifted to the right off-road, swerved back to the left, then overturned off the opposite side of the roadway. In the process, Campos was thrown from the vehicle, and he sustained fatal injuries. There did not appear to be anyone else involved.

One detail that stood out to me is authorities believe the victim wasn’t wearing their seatbelt. I certainly can’t say if that’s true or not, but it’s worth considering why they think that’s true. Is there clear evidence, or is it just what authorities think most likely happened?
Let me give an example to explain why that matters. We had this case not long ago where someone was thrown from their vehicle in a rollover crash. Seeing that, authorities figured the victim wasn’t wearing their seatbelt. Most of the time, they’d be right. But thanks to an independent accident reconstructionist taking a second look, it came to light that the victim’s seatbelt pretensioner failed due to a defect, and they were ejected despite properly wearing their seatbelt. In other words, authorities blamed the victim for something a driver couldn’t possibly foresee or avoid.
If authorities draw conclusions, and they have evidence to support those conclusions, then it’s likely they know all there is to know. But if there appear to be gaps in their reasoning, there could be more to the story.
