Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes crashes like this, I always caution folks against jumping to conclusions. The problem, though, is two types of wrecks get more speculation than just about any other kinds of accidents: single-vehicle wrecks, and accidents involving teen drivers. That’s why I have to wonder if this crash is getting the attention it deserves.

Simply put, there are reasons these situations can happen without the driver doing anything wrong or due to factors which may not have been entirely withing their control. Mechanical defects, tire blowouts, road hazards, being over-served alcohol, medical conditions, poor road design or maintenance, etc. More commonly, of course, these crash happen due to driver error. But when investigators focus only on those more common possibilities, they’re bound to overlook something important. Have authorities been careful not to let that happen here, or is there more to this story not getting the proper attention?
