Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, there’s always a concern about how thorough authorities are being in their investigations. I’ve talked to countless people over the years who trusted that authorities were going to get them the facts they needed only to end up weeks or months down the line still empty-handed. A big reason for that is because not every department prioritizes single-vehicle accidents, so they may overlook complex or uncommon possible factors.

Did a tire blow out? Were there issues with the roadway? Was there another vehicle involved that fled the scene? Was the victim unlawfully over-served by an alcohol provider? Did the vehicle lose control due to a defect? Did a safety defect with seatbelts or airbags cause injuries to be more serious than they should have been?

Likely or not, these are the sorts of questions independent accident reconstructionists answer. Since they have years of experience and training as well as state-of-the-art tools authorities often lack, they can help shed light on how thorough authorities were. Sometimes, independent investigations confirm that authorities were thorough in their efforts. Other times, they show that there were details authorities missed. At the end of the day, it’s about ensuring those affected by the crash know they’re getting the whole story.
