Corpus Christi, TX — September 29, 2024, Joseph Chapa was killed and one person was injured following a car accident at around 2:21 a.m. on Wooldridge Road.
Authorities said in their statements that the crash happened off the corner of Wooldridge Road and Woodway Drive.

It appears that 21-year-old Joseph Chapa and another 21-year-old were in a BMW going along westbound Wooldridge. For reasons not confirmed, the vehicle veered off the left side of the road. There, the car hopped the curb, skidded into a pole, and flipped over.
As a result of the crash, Chapa was killed. The other person in the vehicle had reported injuries. Authorities did not mention anyone else being involved in the accident. Investigations are ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When folks see a single-vehicle accident, they tend to just assume the driver must have been speeding or on their phone. However, jumping to conclusions only risks missing something important. Even authorities may overlook extenuating circumstances that are a lot more complex than just a driver making a mistake. In fact, there may have been factors completely beyond their control.
For example, did the vehicle have any defects? Did airbags and seatbelts function as expected? Did a tire blow out despite appearing to be in good condition? Was there some sort of emergency? Did a bar contribute to the crash by unlawfully over-serving the driver? Are there issues with the roadway itself, such as missing signage or lighting? Was there another reckless driver involved who fled the scene?
Common or not, these things happen. I’ve had countless accidents like this come across my desk, and it can be frustrating seeing all the times authorities barely glanced at the crash scene before making up their minds. It’s important to make sure the evidence speaks for itself, and that requires actually getting all of the evidence. That’s why there’s a rule of thumb that often proves helpful. If folks get answers from authorities, and they feel satisfied they’re getting the whole story, it’s probably because authorities were thorough and left no stone unturned. However, if they find they still have doubts and unanswered questions, it’s possibly because authorities aren’t getting all the facts.
