If authorities have the right person, I have to wonder if they bothered finding out why the driver fled the scene. It’s rarely just out of panic, though that is worth considering. More often, the driver has something specific to hide. For example, a late night accident often involves drunk drivers, which would make it important to address those actions as well as find out if a local alcohol provider contributed to the accident by over-serving the driver. Getting that kind of information can be crucial for the victims and families, so there may need to be independent efforts if authorities haven’t already looked into that possibility.
