With details like these, people tend to just assume everything will be straight-forward, and authorities will easily get all the facts. In reality, every serious accident needs to be treated like something unusual could have happened. Otherwise, something important could slip through the cracks.
For example, I was just discussing an accident with a colleague recently where a woman’s vehicle crashed with a truck, and authorities considered everything pretty open-and-shut. Something independent investigators caught onto, though, is that the woman’s injuries were far more serious than the relatively minor collision would typically cause. As it turned out, she had a defective airbag, causing her to suffer far more serious injuries than she otherwise would have.
I’m not saying that happened here, of course, but it’s an example of why seemingly simple car accidents can prove to be a lot more complex once investigators dig into the details. If they’re too hasty in their efforts, they could miss something important that even the people involved in the crash weren’t aware of.
