How Did This Accident Occur?

Upon hearing about single-car accidents, most folks are quick to blame it on driver error without giving it much extra thought. That’s an understandable instinct, especially considering the fact that human error has a hand in most car accidents. I’m not so quick to jump to that conclusion, though. Why? Because over the three decades in which I’ve been in this career, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation.

It’s not that I know more than anyone else outside of the investigation, by the way. I certainly don’t want to give that impression. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the wreck could have been the result of something gone wrong with the Silverado itself, rather than the ubiquitous “driver error”. What if, for example, it had experienced catastrophic brake failure? Or maybe there was an issue with the steering mechanism? Have tire blowouts or throttle problems been considered? Honestly, motor vehicles are complex machines; any number of things could have been the catalyst of the collision.

An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck rather than allowing them to just fly under the radar. True, these kinds of inspections aren’t routine in most accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. Should the authorities fail to get one done, then a third party investigation can always be brought in to do so instead. That way all the bases are covered. Plus it never hurts to have a second perspective go over everything and ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks.

After all, in the end, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to not only how it happened, but why. That kind of clarity—real answers based on solid evidence—just can’t be provided by surface-level evidence that conveniently places all the blame on the shoulders of the victim.
