Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I get calls all the time from folks who feel that authorities either mishandled their investigations or were more focused on looking for blame than actually looking at the evidence. Unfortunately, it’s nothing new that authorities sometimes treat single-vehicle wrecks as a low priority. This can lead to mistakes that may need independent investigations to set straight.

Did the vehicle experience mechanical issues? Did a tire blow out? Was there missing signage or insufficient lighting at the intersection? Did the victim experience issues due to a medical condition? Was the roadway itself in poor condition? Were authorities able to pull electronic data from the vehicle and other devices? Were there any nearby businesses or residences that had security cameras with a view of the road?

Simply put, if authorities aren’t able to clearly answer these kinds of questions, it could be a sign their investigations weren’t good enough. If they can provide satisfactory answers though, that could help reassure those involved in the accident that the investigations were taken seriously. One way or the other, it takes more evidence to say for sure than what’s currently available to the public.
