Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Wrong-way crashes are some of the most dangerous collisions on the road, and they almost always lead to the same question: How did a driver end up going the wrong way on the interstate? In this case, reports indicate that the Subaru was traveling against traffic when it collided head-on with a semi-truck. That makes it critical to figure out why.
Highway interchanges, especially in poorly lit or poorly marked areas, can sometimes mislead drivers, especially those unfamiliar with the area. If that was a factor here, then road design and signage need to be examined. Were there clear “Wrong Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs? Were ramps and lanes properly marked? These are things that can make the difference between a driver realizing their mistake and continuing into danger.
At this stage, there’s not enough public information to say exactly what caused this crash. But if investigators focus only on the fact that the Subaru was going the wrong way without digging deeper into why, they risk missing the bigger picture. The victim’s family deserves answers to any questions they may have about this crash.
