One of the most important but often overlooked questions in cases like this is, “Where did the driver get their alcohol?” When a crash involves an intoxicated driver, it’s easy to focus solely on their actions. But more often than not, there’s a bigger picture: one that includes the source of the alcohol.

Under Texas dram shop laws, bars and restaurants can be held accountable if they serve alcohol to someone who is obviously intoxicated. The law exists because establishments that ignore safe alcohol service don’t just endanger their customers: they put everyone on the road at risk. Yet, in many drunk driving crashes, investigations stop at the driver and never look into where they were drinking before getting behind the wheel.

If authorities’ allegations are correct, then a critical next step should be identifying where the accused was drinking. Answering that question not only helps those affected by the crash get the full truth, but it also ensures that any alcohol provider who broke the law faces the consequences of their actions.
