Accident Report

Austin, TX — June 12, 2026, Jonathan Hernandez was killed in a hit-and-run accident at about 11:30 p.m. on the frontage road for northbound Interstate 35/Monarch Highway.

Authorities said a vehicle, believed to be a Hyundai Sonata, hit a pedestrian near Spence Street and continued driving.

The pedestrian, 33-year-old Jonathan Hernandez, died after being transported to a nearby hospital, according to authorities.

Police arrested the suspected driver after a tip led them to a northwest Austin apartment complex, where the vehicle thought to be involved in the crash was found under a tarp, authorities said. The 34-year-old woman was charged with a felony count of collision involving death.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Travis County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Police have managed to track down the driver thought to be responsible for this crash, so now investigators can turn their attention to the why. Was the area well lit? Was the driver distracted, fatigued or even impaired at the time? Did her vehicle have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? Authorities should work to answer these questions to get to the bottom of what happened on the frontage road for I-35.

Physical evidence, witness statements, vehicle data and any available video footage should help investigators reconstruct this accident, while cell phone records could show what the driver and the pedestrian were doing at the time of the crash.

If authorities suspect a mechanical problem contributed to this crash, an independent expert likely will be needed to examine the vehicle because most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such inspections, in my experience.

This investigation should provide the pedestrian’s family with a clear picture of how this accident unfolded.
