Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks, my concern is always whether or not it’s being taken seriously. I get calls all the time from families left in the dark with unanswered questions, and a significant amount of those calls are in relation to crashes like this. Let me explain why that is.
Simply put, a lot of departments see single-vehicle accidents as a low priority. Officers often have enough problems getting access to proper accident reconstruction tools and the time they need to investigate complex contributing factors thoroughly. When a supervisor is potentially over their shoulder pushing them to move on to other work, it only adds to the possibility something important is going to slip through the cracks.
This is one of the reasons I take initial reports with a grain of salt until the details get a second look from more experienced independent accident reconstructionists. They bring state-of-the-art tools to the table and dedicate their time to getting answers. Sometimes, their efforts show that authorities left no stone unturned and did a good job. Other times, they find details that authorities completely overlooked or got wrong. At the end of the day, families want to be certain they’re getting the whole story after a deadly accident takes their loved one from them. Just knowing what happened can be a significant weight off their minds.
