Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

An apparent wrong-way crash obviously raises concerns, but I always tell folks it’s best to avoid jumping to conclusions. A wrong-way crash is no exception. I’ll give a perfect example of how this sort of thing can involve unusual or subtle factors authorities often overlook.

A while back here in Dallas, there was research into one of our tollways that seemed to have an abnormally high amount of wrong-way collisions. That research uncovered that the exit ramp signs warning motorists not to enter the wrong way were too high. They were lowered, and lo and behold, the number of wrong way crashes went down.

I’m not saying that happened here, necessarily, but folks actually looking into a problem instead of jumping to conclusions likely saved a lot of lives. I’ve found throughout my career it’s always best to err on the side of caution, if only to ensure those involved in an accident know they’re getting the whole story.
