UPDATE (April 21, 2023): Recent information from authorities identified the passenger in John Grube’s vehicle as 90-year-old Kay Clemens Pries. Clemens Pries was flown to a hospital due to her injuries. The driver of the pickup has not yet been identified, and their current condition is unclear. Investigations are ongoing.

Odessa, TX — April 10, 2023, John Edward Grube was killed and two others sustained injuries resulting from a car accident on Murphy Street.

Preliminary details provided by Texas DPS officials say that the crash happened at approximately 8:25 a.m. along West Murphy Street near the MHC Kenworth dealership. It also involved a train that travels along Murphy and Business 20.

According to officials, 86-year-old John Grube and another person were in a Honda which authorities say was going eastbound along Murphy Street. As the Honda made a left turn, police say that an oncoming Ford truck pulling a trailer crashed into the Honda. This resulted in the Ford running off-road and ending up on the railroad tracks where a passing train struck the pickup. The driver of the pickup got out of the vehicle before the collision with the train.

As a result of the initial collision, Grube sustained fatal injuries. The other person in the Honda and the driver of the Ford both were taken to hospitals. The occupant of the Honda was said to have critical injuries while the Ford driver’s condition was apparently stable.

At this time, the exact factors contributing to the crash remain unconfirmed.
