Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
This crash on Interstate 94 raises questions about the factors that led a semi-truck to lose control and crash into the Sauk River. While the injuries to the driver and passenger were described as non-life-threatening, the circumstances of the incident highlight the challenges of operating large vehicles on icy roads.
The primary issue is why the truck driver lost control. Investigators will likely examine whether speed, distraction or other driver behaviors played a role. Commercial truck drivers are expected to adjust their driving to account for adverse conditions like snow and ice, including reducing speed and increasing following distances. Evidence such as the truck’s engine control module (ECM) data may provide insight into the driver’s actions before the crash, including speed and braking activity.
The road conditions on I-94 also deserve attention. While the presence of snow and ice was noted, it’s important to assess whether the highway was properly maintained at the time. Were snowplows or salt trucks active in the area, and was the road surface treated appropriately for the weather conditions? Poorly maintained roads can exacerbate the risk of losing control, even for experienced drivers.
The truck’s mechanical condition is another critical factor. Did the vehicle’s braking or steering systems perform as expected, or did a mechanical issue contribute to the loss of control? Investigators will need to inspect the truck to rule out any equipment failures.
Lastly, the circumstances of the truck leaving the road and entering the Sauk River highlight the potential environmental impact of such crashes. Spills from fuel or cargo could pose risks to the waterway, emphasizing the importance of swift containment and cleanup efforts.
This crash underscores the importance of vigilance and preparation when operating commercial vehicles in winter weather. For the injured driver and passenger, understanding what went wrong is essential to ensure accountability.
