How Did This Accident Occur?
Many folks, when they hear about single-vehicle accidents that happen in the middle of the countryside, are quick to make the assumption that it must have been due to driver error. I’m not so eager to jump to that conclusion, though. Why? Because over the last three decades in which I’ve been in this career, I have seen plenty of cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. Sometimes, things just don’t turn out how they initially appeared to have been on the surface.
To be clear, though, I’m not trying to insinuate that I know more about this particular accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the Ford’s lane deviation could have been a result of something gone wrong with the vehicle itself rather than the ubiquitous “driver error”. What if, for example, it had been dealing with a steering mechanism problem? Or maybe it had a tire blowout? I am well aware that these things aren’t exactly likely, but neither are they impossible.
Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth inspection done on the pickup. That way any mechanical malfunctions of product defects that might otherwise have flown under the radar will be brought to light. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve real answers backed by solid evidence. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
