Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Authorities allege that the teen driver in this incident was drunk at the time of the crash. I wonder if they’ll be content with charging the kid, or whether they’re also looking into where he was allegedly drinking before the crash. To be clear, it isn’t my place to comment on specific allegations relating to the driver involved here. Rather, those allegations have me asking the same question that’s probably on a lot of people’s minds right now: Did someone give alcohol to the 18-year-old?
Obviously, providing alcohol to someone who is underage should have consequences. Unfortunately, in too many instances, authorities either lack the will or resources to investigate where the alcohol came from. I’m only speaking for myself, but the thought that an alcohol provider in the community could have contributed to this crash and might escape punishment doesn’t sit right with me. The only way to stop these kinds of accidents, to prevent future lost lives, is to ensure that everyone who plays a role in drunk driving crashes is held accountable.
