Grayson County, TX — May 9, 2024, Jerry Henderson was injured following a hit-and-run truck accident at about 10:30 a.m. along U.S. Highway 82.
According to authorities, 81-year-old Jerry Henderson was traveling in a Chevrolet Impala in the left of two eastbound lanes on U.S. 82 in the vicinity east of Rex Cruse Drive when the accident took place.

The impala was reportedly attempting to pass an 18-wheeler with a trailer in tow which had been traveling in the right-hand lane of the highway. Officials indicate that, as an uninvolved vehicle was entering the highway from an onramp, the truck and trailer merged into the left lane at a reportedly unsafe time, resulting in a collision between the front-right side of the Impala and the back-left side of the truck’s trailer. This collision caused the Impala to overturn, coming to a stop in the center median resting on its left side.
The truck that struck the Impala allegedly fled the scene, the person(s) inside failing to stop and render aid of any sort to the victim. Henderson suffered reportedly severe injuries as a result of the wreck; he was transported to a local medical facility by emergency medical services in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

In my experience, hit-and-run accidents involving commercial trucks are rarely straightforward. They require thorough investigations to understand the contributing factors and to ensure accountability. This case, where an 18-wheeler allegedly fled the scene after causing a serious accident, raises several critical questions.
While it might seem daunting to locate a fleeing truck, it’s more feasible than many people realize. Modern trucks are often equipped with GPS tracking, and there are usually witnesses or surveillance cameras that can provide vital clues. Law enforcement agencies have tools and methods to track down hit-and-run vehicles, and persistent investigation can lead to identifying and holding the responsible party accountable.
First, it’s essential to determine why the truck merged into the left lane at what appears to have been an unsafe time. Was the driver distracted, did they fail to see the Impala, or were they trying to avoid another vehicle? Reviewing traffic camera footage, gathering data from vehicle event recorders, and analyzing witness statements can help piece together the events leading up to the collision.
Next, we need to consider the role of the trucking company. Was the driver properly trained and adhering to safety protocols? Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their drivers are well-prepared and aware of safe driving practices. If the company neglected proper training or allowed unsafe driving behaviors, they might share responsibility for the accident.
Additionally, the condition of the truck itself should be examined. Was the vehicle properly maintained? Mechanical failures, such as faulty signals or mirrors, can contribute to accidents. Reviewing maintenance records and conducting thorough inspections can reveal whether such issues played a role.
Investigations must go beyond the immediate crash scene to uncover the full story. This includes examining the truck driver’s logs, evaluating their driving history, and possibly consulting with accident reconstruction experts. A comprehensive approach ensures that all responsible parties are held accountable and that those affected by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those impacted by the accident. Thorough investigations and, if necessary, independent inquiries are crucial to considering every factor and ensuring accountability for everyone involved.
