Authorities say they recommended that driver be charged for DWI. Is that all they’ve said about this situation, or is there more information not yet public? As serious as drunk driving is, it can surprise people when authorities are haphazard with their investigations. The reality is once they have someone to charge, they’re more likely to just move on to other responsibilities.
For example, I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers who illegally over-serve drivers that then cause serious accidents. Far too often, we start looking into the negligent alcohol provider’s actions, find they’ve broken all kinds of laws, yet authorities never even bothered investigating on their own. In fact, there were multiple times where we handed our findings over to police, and they still dropped the ball. Maybe they’ve been more thorough here—that would certainly be encouraging to hear. But I’ve said a lot on this blog that sometimes victims and families only see the resolution they deserve after taking the steps to make sure someone is actually working to get it.
