Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to motorcycle wrecks, there’s always a concern about how investigations were handled. To be rather blunt, a lot of people assume the worst of motorcyclists, and they tend to jump to conclusions about an accident like the one in Eastland County before they actually have any of the facts.
Unfortunately, authorities sometimes harbor similar biases. In fact, I’ve had cases where independent investigations found authorities completely misinterpreted or ignored clear evidence that showed the rider was a victim of factors beyond their control. Sometimes that it takes that second look to keep the story straight. Bias gets a lot less traction when there’s clear evidence to counter it, and that requires investigators who prioritize facts over their own preconceived notions.
If authorities here were thorough and found evidence that fills in all the blanks, then they may ultimately give a fair accounting of what went wrong here. As things are currently reported, though, it certainly seems like there’s more to the story.
