Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks like this, I’m always concerned about whether authorities looked into possible factors beyond the most common ones. People tend to blame these accidents on driver mistakes like being sleepy at the wheel, texting, or (more pessimistically) intoxication, but there are many reasons a vehicle might leave its lane without the driver doing anything wrong. From poor road design to vehicle malfunctions to medical episodes, I’ve seen authorities overlook crucial details simply because they were only looking for signs of more common causes.

I’m sure investigators will have to look into driver mistakes as a matter of procedure, and maybe they’ll find evidence proving one was behind this too. I just know that authorities can jump to conclusions the same as anyone else; the problem is that when they do it, their assumptions become the “gospel truth” of a crash unless someone challenges them. At the end of the day, what matters most is ensuring that people who lost a loved one get the facts they need and deserve. Even if all it brings them is some closure, that’s still far better than lingering questions. If authorities don’t help them answer those, who will?
