Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While details contributing to the crash aren’t confirmed right now, I do have concerns about if the investigations are being handled properly. It’s not that I see any specific issues; rather, this crash involves two subjects that I get a lot of calls about from families left with unanswered questions: single-vehicle wrecks and motorcycle wrecks.
In both situations, there can be unusual, complex contributing factors that require close examination from experienced, well-equipped professionals. Mechanical defects, road design flaws, missing lighting or signage, drivers illegally over-served by bars, tire blowouts, etc. But instead of having experienced investigators examine these wrecks closely, people are more likely to assume the driver did something wrong and simply move on. This is especially true when the victims aren’t around to tell their side of the story.
That’s why the evidence needs to be able to speak in their place. Regardless of what happened, families deserve to know they’re at least getting the whole story, and that means getting all of the facts and looking into even unlikely possible scenarios. Maybe authorities here will see that happens. Too often, though, I’ve found that relying solely on authorities to investigate deadly wrecks ends with nothing but doubts and missing pieces.
