Port Arthur, TX — July 14, 2025, at least 20 people were injured as the result of a gas leak that happened around 2:00 p.m. off Houston Avenue.
Authorities said they were called to the JBS Packing facility at 111 Houston Avenue.

Details are still preliminary right now. Authorities say they believe that a forklift may have been “using a contaminated fuel.” This reportedly led to a carbon monoxide and methane gas leak that begin causing people to faint and vomit.
Authorities say 20 workers were taken to the hospital. Exact conditions weren’t specified. Authorities say they continue to work to confirm what exactly happened.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While people often look at situations and just assume everything is open-and-shut due to OSHA and workers’ comp, the reality is things can always be far more complex than that. For one, Texas work accident law is more complex than in any other state in the country. There is not always a guarantee of benefits, and workers sometimes are left on their own to seek out the help they need, which often means they need help from independent professionals.
Beyond that, though, accidents are not always the result of a worker or employer’s actions. It’s important that the investigations also consider potential defects. Sometimes, accidents happen because a manufacturer or a worker from another company made a mistake. If inspections can determine that the cause of this supposed leak was beyond the control of the workers or company it affected, there may need to be far more thorough investigations than OSHA typically handles on their own.
Those two factors combined tell me that resolving this situation is likely to be anything but straight-forward.
