Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the challenges with single-vehicle accidents is they don’t always get the proper, thorough investigations they deserve. Authorities sometimes see accidents like this as a low priority, so important details can slip through the cracks.

For example, I had a case not long ago where authorities blamed a driver for not wearing their seatbelt. The family found that to be unusual behavior, so they wanted a second opinion. We had independent specialists examine the victim’s vehicle, and it turned out the seatbelt was defective. It failed to lock properly, but authorities simply saw that the victim was thrown from their seat and jumped to conclusions.

It’s possible authorities here have been more thorough to ensure all possible factors are getting the attention they need. However, I learned a long time ago not to take that sort of effort for granted. Sometimes, a second set of eyes can show there’s more to a situation than authorities are letting on.
