With single-vehicle accidents, it’s important to consider what steps authorities have taken to get the whole story. They don’t always prioritize the accident, and that can lead to important details slipping through the cracks. I’ve found that just asking a few general questions can help gauge whether or not authorities are really giving a particular crash the attention it needs.

  1. How much time are authorities spending on the crash? To make sure complex possible factors get attention, there often needs to be investigations beyond just the accident scene. Many departments, however, will quickly pressure officers to move on to other work before they’ve really had a chance to dig into the details. That can be a sure sign they’re overlooking important possibilities.
  2. Did authorities look into all of the electronic evidence? This could include a vehicle’s Engine Control Module, which is essentially a black box that can show things like speeding or braking in the moments leading up to the collision. Alternatively, I’ve had cases where authorities failed to look at nearby businesses or homes that had security cameras catch an accident on video.
  3. Did the accident involve a vehicle defect? This could be something that caused the vehicle to lose control, such as a defective tire or faulty steering or braking mechanisms. It could also involve faulty safety devices, like seatbelts or airbags, which fail to protect drivers the way they’re intended to.

I often find that asking these kinds of questions can reveal just how much attention authorities are really giving an accident. When investigations are too shallow or narrow in scope, they’re not likely to have satisfying answers. That’s when steps can be taken to ensure there are safety nets in place to catch whatever authorities may be letting slip through the cracks.
