UPDATE (December 4, 2023): At the time of writing, the Star-Telegram reports that there are pending charges for intoxication manslaughter against the driver accused of killing Jared Huddleston and Kristen Huddleston.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It’s not my place to say if these allegations are true or not. But if they turn out to be true, it tragically wouldn’t be surprising. Wrong-way crashes, in the vast majority of situations, involve intoxicated drivers who aren’t in their right state of mind. After all, consider how unaware someone has to be not to realize they’re going the wrong direction on a major highway.
What concerns me more, however, is what all led up to the accident before the driver going into oncoming traffic. I’ve had many cases involving wrong-way drivers, and it almost always came to light that the driver was extremely drunk due to being illegally over-served by a local establishment. Are authorities looking into that possibility? Cause if not, there could be a lot more charges than intoxication manslaughter needing to be filed if there’s going to be justice for this senseless loss of life.
