Little as I like saying this, accidents like the one above don’t always get the attention they deserve. People tend to see a basic fact pattern and reach their own conclusions without waiting for all the facts; with a situation like the one on Dixie Street, for example, I’d wager readers had theories about fatigue, distraction from a phone, or (more cynically) impairment. However, there are many reasons something like this could happen that don’t involve driver errors, from poor road conditions to vehicle defects to medical emergencies. In decades of doing this work I’ve seen authorities overlook those and other possibilities because they were too focused on more obvious ones.

That’s not to say investigators will fumble the ball in Houston, only that I hope they’ll keep an open mind and be as thorough as is necessary. At the end of the day, what matters most is getting the whole story for the people who need and deserve it, like the folks who lost a loved one in that accident. Even if all it brings them is some closure, that’s still far better than leaving them with unanswered questions.
