People tend to think crashes involving alcohol are open-and-shut. Authorities charge the driver, and that’s that, right? Well, there could be more to the story the victims and families need to know about. Unfortunately, authorities often move on before getting that story, which is why there usually needs to be independent investigations into where a drunk driver got their alcohol from.

Put simply, if an alcohol provider over-serves someone who is obviously intoxicated, they’re exposed to potential criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability for the resulting injuries. When authorities are too narrow in their focus, they tend to overlook complex or extenuating circumstances such as complicit alcohol providers. Maybe they’ve been more thorough here, but I’ve handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases, and I rarely see authorities make their own effort to look for negligent alcohol providers. That’s why I have to wonder if there’s more to this story than what authorities are saying.
