Shelby County, TX — March 2, 2024, James Daylon Witter was fatally injured due to a car accident at around 8:50 p.m. along F.M. 139.
According to officials, the accident happened off the corner of the F.M. 139 and F.M. 2572 intersection.
It appears that 25-year-old James Daylon Witter was in a Chevy Silverado pickup traveling northbound on F.M. 139. Rounding a curve, the vehicle apparently traveled off-road, went across F.M. 2572, then continued off-road and overturned. Witter was thrown from the vehicle, and he died as a result.

Right now, factors surrounding the accident remain unconfirmed. Hopefully, authorities are actually giving the crash the attention it deserves. Single-vehicle wrecks like this tend to slip through the cracks, and mistakes can happen that leave families with unanswered questions.
Recently, for example, our firm had a case which involved a driver being thrown from their vehicle. Authorities told the family the victim wasn’t wearing their seatbelt, which shocked them since they knew the victim to be diligent about always wearing their seatbelt. Sure enough, further investigations proved authorities wrong. The seatbelt was actually defective, leading to the ejection despite the victim doing everything right. The investigating officer just figured the most likely explanation was true, and they jumped to conclusions.
I’m not saying that happened here, of course, but it’s an example of how important it is to be thorough after a crash like this. The victim isn’t around to tell their side of the story. That’s why the evidence needs to be able to do that in their place, and that can’t happen if investigators aren’t looking for that evidence.
