Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, authorities aren’t always as thorough as people would expect. They’re not often seen as a high priority, so authorities might not have the time or tools they need to really dig into the details closely. That’s when important details start to slip through the cracks.

For example, I handled a crash not long ago where an officer didn’t have experience examining vehicles, and they didn’t have the proper equipment even if they did. As a result, they overlooked what our independent investigations caught: a defective seatbelt. The victim ended up seriously injured because of a defect they had no idea about. Had things been left solely up to authorities, the problem likely never would have seen the light of day.

I’m not saying that happened here, but it’s important investigations are handled by experienced and well-equipped professionals who can at least rule out uncommon or complex possible factors. If they aren’t, it could allow too much information to slip by unnoticed.
