This incident brings to mind a case I had a while back. That incident involved a man who was hit and killed by a car while walking on the highway. The family asked us to look into things just to be sure they were getting all the facts. Well, something authorities overlooked was the fact the man had been drinking at a local bowling alley while out with friends. The evidence we gathered clearly showed that establishment illegally over-served the victim, continuing to pour drinks despite the man presenting a clear danger to himself. After leaving to go home, the man responsibly chose to walk home rather than drive, but he unfortunately became disoriented due to being over-served. This led him to accidentally wander off the sidewalk, onto the highway, and into the path of the vehicle.

What people looked at and wrote off as just someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time was actually someone being put in harm’s way because a local alcohol provider couldn’t be bothered to follow the law. Unfortunately, these kinds of details slip through the cracks all the time. Authorities are sometimes able to retrace a person’s steps and catch these things, but they often don’t bother looking beyond the accident scene itself, especially when they can just chalk everything up to “alcohol” and move on.

I don’t know what led up to the events here, but I do hope that someone is looking beyond the crash scene to get the whole picture.
