One of the reasons that single-vehicle wrecks can be particularly challenging is authorities often get tunnel vision. While an accident reconstruction needs to be broad to rule out all kinds of potential contributing factors, authorities may put too much focus solely on the driver’s possible actions. That’s important, obviously, but that risks letting other important details slip through the cracks.

For example, one thing I always look for when people come to me with single-vehicle wrecks is vehicle inspections. It’s important to check a vehicle for possible defects. Not only could that be what caused the crash, but there could also be issues that made the victim’s injuries more severe than they otherwise would have been—faulty seatbelts, defective airbags, vehicles not withstanding a rollover as expected, etc. If authorities haven’t done one of these inspections, it can be a sign that they didn’t really take the investigations seriously.

It’s possible authorities were thorough here, and an independent investigation might simply confirm police already did a good job. However, it’s important for victims and families to trust their gut. If they’re not satisfied with the answers authorities have for them, it’s understandable to seek out alternate avenues for making sure the crash gets the attention it deserves.
