Accident Report

Ward County, TX — April 27, 2026, Jacob Wade and another person were injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident at about 5:45 p.m. on Interstate 20 near Wickett.

Authorities said a westbound semi-truck with a dump trailer lost part of its load of caliche near mile marker 74. The hardened soil created a large dust cloud as other vehicles drove over it, causing a chain-reaction crash that involved more than 20 vehicles.

Jacob Wade, a 48-year-old man driving a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, and a 24-year-old El Paso man driving a 2025 Jeep Compass were seriously injured in the crash, according to authorities, while 15 others were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Ward County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Initial reports say a truck spilled caliche on I-20 near Wickett, but at this point we don’t know why. Did the dump trailer malfunction? Was it loaded improperly? Did another vehicle crash into the truck, causing the spill? These are the kind of questions that investigators must consider as they work to sort out what happened on this stretch of interstate.

Finding answers likely will take more than gathering evidence at the scene, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video of the crash. Investigators also should look at the trucking company and the company responsible for loading the dump trailer to ensure the equipment was properly maintained and loaded.

Those affected by this crash deserve answers so they will know everyone who may have played a role in the pile-up.
