Scurry, TX — February 23, 2025, Jacob Smitherman was injured in a car accident at about 1:05 a.m. on F.M. 148.
A preliminary accident report indicates a 2014 Buick Verano overturned for an unknown reason while traveling northwest near Mt. Olive Cemetary.
Driver Jacob Smitherman, 19, suffered serious injuries in the crash, according to authorities.

When I see reports of a crash like this, my first thought is that the injured driver and his loved ones deserve clear answers about what happened. A single-vehicle rollover with no immediately known cause raises important questions, and in my experience, these incidents often have underlying factors that aren’t immediately obvious. Before any conclusions can be reached, three key areas need further investigation.
First, did authorities conduct a thorough investigation? When a vehicle overturns, it’s important to determine why it lost stability. Did investigators check for roadway hazards such as debris, potholes or uneven pavement? Were there any signs that the driver swerved to avoid something, such as another vehicle, an animal or an unexpected obstacle in the road? Additionally, given that this happened after 1 a.m., did visibility or road conditions contribute to the crash? A complete accident reconstruction should explore all these factors rather than assume driver error was the sole cause.
Second, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? The Buick Verano involved in this accident is more than a decade old, meaning mechanical failures like brake malfunctions, power steering issues or tire blowouts could be possibilities. Rollover crashes are often linked to stability problems, particularly if a vehicle’s suspension or tires are compromised. If the driver lost control because the car didn’t respond as expected, that could indicate an issue with the vehicle itself. A forensic inspection is necessary to determine whether a mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
Finally, has all available electronic data been collected?
