Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Even if the allegations reported here are true, that may not be the beginning and end of this story. Even when it seems there is a clearly at-fault driver, that doesn’t guarantee a victim’s loved ones will get the resolution they deserve. Why is that?

Generally speaking, authorities have their own priorities. Those tend to be narrowly focused on finding someone who can face charges or citations. Outside of that, getting a complete picture and getting the sort of evidence a family might need for other legal purposes requires more thorough independent investigations. This is why police investigations alone often fall short when it comes to the needs of a family, even if they do want to see someone held accountable for the loss of a loved one.

It’s possible authorities here were better equipped and more motivated to give the crash the full attention it deserved. In my experience, though, it’s best not to take that for granted. That’s often a sure-fire way to let important evidence slip through the cracks.
