Martin County, TX — September 19, 2024, 21-year-old Jack Parks and 19-year-old Shelby Carroll were killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer on State Highway 349 in Martin County.
Authorities say the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on SH 349 near mile marker 300. Preliminary investigation suggests Carroll was driving a Jeep Wrangler north on the highway when she approached a Freightliner 18-wheeler, which was stopped in the inside lane preparing to turn left into a private drive.
For reasons not clear in reports, the Jeep did not slow or steer clear and crashed into the rear right of the semi-trailer. After the impact the Jeep spun off the road and rolled over before coming to rest on its side.

Shelby Carroll and Lorin “Jack” Parks, her passenger, were fatally injured in the crash. The truck driver was reportedly unhurt.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After just about any accident, one of the most important things is to keep an open mind as investigators continue to gather facts. Some people are often tempted to take the few tentative details in early reports and then build their own narrative around them, but in many cases the story they end up with is both factually incorrect and highly unfair.
Take rear-end crashes, for example. Folks are often quick to blame the rear driver for those; I’ve even heard some say (incorrectly) that the law automatically blames that person. That’s untrue, as each situation is judged on its facts and fault is never automatic. Driver error may be the issue behind many rear-end crashes, but no one should take it for granted right away.
That’s just as true in Martin County, where many questions still need answers: How long was the truck stopped before the Jeep approached? Did the semi-trailer’s brake lights work? Was its turn signal activated? How fast was the Jeep traveling? Did its safety features (brakes, seatbelts, airbags) work properly? Has all electronic data from cell phones, dashcams, and vehicle monitoring equipment been gathered and examined? Did anyone else see what happened? Who’s telling the victims’ side of the story in all this?
I don’t know more than public reports can say about what happened here, but that’s the issue: They don’t say much. I don’t expect authorities to have everything figured out already, but I also wonder exactly how much time and effort they can really devote to getting all the facts. That young man and woman have loved ones who deserve to know the whole story, so who’ll make sure they have it?
