How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities say they believe a vehicle failing to control speed led to the collision, but that’s just a surface-level explanation. What they need to do is find out what that driver was doing and why they weren’t able to avoid the collision.
For example, cellphones are the first thing I look into following any serious car accident. It’s the most common reason for people failing to avoid accidents, and it’s important to secure phone data as soon as possible. One would think authorities would do that, but that’s not always true.
At the end of the day, people don’t have to give up their phone data unless a court tells them they have to. Sometimes, authorities aren’t motivated to put in that kind of effort. That’s why I’ve had many cases where phone records only came to light after our own independent investigations stepped in and went through a judge to get those records.
Regardless of whether cellphone use led to this accident, it’s important things like that are getting the attention they need. Victims and families who have as much evidence as possible telling their story will have better outcomes. So if authorities are working to investigate this from all angles, that would be good to hear. However, it would be far from the first time a seemingly straight-forward accident was left to slip through the cracks.
