Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If the allegations here are true, it brings up a significant concern: Who gave alcohol to a teenager? There are many possible answers, though folks tend to assume teens must have been given the alcohol by an older friend or family member. That’s worth considering, but it’s also important to consider the possibility a local alcohol provider sold it to them.

I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers responsible for contributing to serious crashes like this. There is no shortage of bars, corner stores, and liquor stores who are willing to over-serve people, sell after hours, serve minors, and otherwise break every rule they can so long as they think they can get away with it. That’s why it’s important after crashes like this to find out where the alcohol came from. If there was an alcohol provider involved, it’s important they learn that they, too, are subject to Texas law and can face consequences for their actions. Not only could that potentially provide a much needed resolution to victims and families, but it can also make the roads safer for the whole community.
