Shelby County, OH — September 4, 2024, Iurie Chetrusca was killed following a three-truck accident at approximately 3:15 p.m. along Interstate Highway 75.
According to authorities, the accident took place in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 in the vicinity of the Botkins Road exit.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Preliminary reports state that three 18-wheelers—an International, a Freightliner, and a Volvo—were involved in the wreck. Officials state that, for as yet unknown reason, the Freightliner rear-ended the International. The Freightliner was then apparently hit by the Volvo which was occupied by 43-year-old Iurie Chetrusca. The wreck caused the Freightliner’s trailer to catch on fire, as did the Volvo and its trailer. Chetrusca suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

When accidents like this happen, it’s easy to assume they result from a momentary lapse or a split-second error. However, based on my experience, crashes involving large trucks tend to have more complex causes that require thorough investigation.
The details of this particular crash are still unfolding, but the involvement of multiple 18-wheelers raises important questions about factors such as speed, following distance, and proper maintenance. In rear-end collisions like this one, it’s crucial to consider whether one or more of the drivers failed to respond in time to slowing traffic or if external factors, like poor road conditions or mechanical failure, played a role. Given that two of the trailers caught fire, it will be important for investigators to assess whether improper loading or maintenance contributed to the severity of the incident.
In situations like this, it’s also worth considering the role of the trucking companies involved. Commercial carriers are responsible for ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained and their drivers are trained to handle various roadway conditions safely. If any of the companies involved failed to meet these obligations—whether through inadequate training, improper maintenance, or pushing drivers to meet unrealistic schedules—they may share some responsibility for the crash.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
