According to officials, 51-year-old Isabel Veronica Sanchez was in a Ford Explorer traveling eastbound on 1st Street. Up ahead, it appears a westbound BMW had turned right into the Quality Inn lot, then attempted to make a left turn to go eastbound on 1st Street. The BMW entered the path of Sanchez’s Ford, and the vehicles collided.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Authorities allege that the BMW driver was under the influence of alcohol. If this is true, are they the only ones responsible for this crash? Too often, authorities put all of their focus on the drunk drivers when they could also be conducting investigations into whether or not an alcohol provider illegally over-served that driver.

Here’s why that matters. For one, victims and families don’t just want someone to blame; they want accountability. If there’s more than one party who broke the law and caused them harm, why would one get punished while the other gets let off the hook? There’s room enough for both to face legal consequences. If evidence shows that’s appropriate, why wouldn’t they?

Secondly, there’s a concern for public safety when it comes to negligent alcohol providers. Simply put, across hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers our firm has handled, I’ve yet to see one face criminal charges, liability, fines, and other penalties that didn’t clean up their act. So not only can they be held accountable, they can be put on the straight and narrow before their actions harm anyone else.

So while there needs to be more information to confirm what happened here, I’ve seen details like this too often not to wonder if the investigations are being handled properly. Are authorities still investigating what happened here and who all may be responsible?
