Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
A serious accident like this can obviously be challenging to investigate. When people see a home explosion, the first thought is generally that there must have been a gas leak. That’s often true, but the potential causes of a leak vary quite a bit. Was it an issue with the gas line itself? Was there a worn appliance? Did this happen due to a manufacturing defect? Was there an appliance a contractor installed poorly? And that’s all just if gas was the cause of the explosion and not some other source. Weighing all the possibilities can take significant time and effort from investigators. My hope is at least that authorities are open with those affected by the accident so they can at least feel confident they’re getting the whole story.
