Panola County, TX — November 5, 2024, one person was injured in a hit-and-run truck accident at approximately 5:00 a.m. along S.H. 315.
According to authorities, a 52-year-old man from Shreveport, Louisiana, was traveling in a northeast bound Freightliner 18-wheeler hauling a trailer on S.H. 315 in the vicinity southwest of Dixie Lake Road when the accident took place.

The weather and road conditions in the area at the time were reported to have been rainy and wet. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, a southwest bound 18-wheeler of unknown make or model hydroplaned, leading to a momentary loss of control. It reportedly veered to the left, crossing over the center turn lane and partially entering the northeast bound lane of the highway. The Freightliner attempted evasive action to miss a collision with the trailer, but was ultimately unable to do so. The unknown truck did regain control and head back into its proper lane of travel, but a collision still took place between the back left side of the unknown truck’s trailer and the left side of the Freightliner’s trailer. This caused the Freightliner to veer off of the right side of the road, coming to a stop and becoming suspended over a culvert ditch.
The man from the Freightliner sustained serious injuries as a result of the wreck. The unknown truck allegedly fled the scene, the person(s) inside failing to stop and render aid of any sort to the victim. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When people hear about hit-and-run accidents, they often focus on the fleeing driver’s lack of accountability. However, based on my experience, incidents like this often involve a combination of factors that demand thorough investigation to ensure that all responsible parties are held to account.
What caused the unknown truck to hydroplane and lose control in the first place? Were the tires worn or improperly inflated, making it more likely to lose traction on the wet road? Did the driver fail to adjust their speed to the rainy conditions? Understanding why the truck lost control is critical to determining whether this was an unfortunate accident or the result of negligence.
The Freightliner driver’s injuries are also cause for concern. Did the unknown truck take adequate steps to regain control and avoid a collision once it began to skid? Fleeing the scene not only left the injured driver without assistance, but it also raises questions about whether the fleeing truck’s driver was aware of or contributed to conditions that caused the crash. Could they have been trying to avoid accountability for other infractions, such as improper equipment maintenance or a regulatory violation?
Even in a situation where the unknown truck fled the scene, it likely left behind critical evidence. Physical evidence like paint transfer, tire marks, or debris from the vehicle can often provide investigators with important clues. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras might have captured images of the truck, allowing law enforcement to trace its route.
Additionally, the trailer involved in the crash may have markings or other identifying features that can help authorities identify the truck’s owner. In many cases, commercial trucks are equipped with GPS systems or electronic logging devices (ELDs) that can reveal their movements leading up to and after an accident. These systems can provide a detailed record of the truck’s location, even if the driver attempted to flee.
While it’s never guaranteed that the runaway truck will be located, the tools available to modern investigators make it far more likely than many might think. If the truck was part of a commercial fleet, was it properly maintained to operate safely in inclement weather? Failing to ensure that vehicles are equipped to handle adverse road conditions is a form of negligence that could have directly contributed to the crash.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
