I’m glad to learn that authorities were able to track down the offending driver and take them into custody. Now I hope they can find out what the heck that person was thinking when they fled the scene of a serious crash.

I don’t like being that harsh, but hit-and-runs always aggravate me. Why did they run? Did they just panic in a tense moment, or did they try to hide something else? If so, what? Drugs? Outstanding warrants? Drunk driving? If it was the last one, were they illegally over-served somewhere that night? What else could have played a part in that person’s decision to abandon a wreck they caused?

Hopefully authorities will make it a point to look into all that, but I wonder if they’re ready to close the book since they caught a “bad guy.” If they don’t look into the full timeline of the crash, they might miss important details. Over-service by a bar, for example, could be a violation of Texas dram shop law. If that happened, whatever bar provided the excessive alcohol may also be liable for the victim’s injuries. At that point the bar could owe the victim a lot more than an apology. Will law enforcement look into that possibility, or should someone else ensure nothing slipped through the cracks?
