Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks, there’s always a concern about how thorough authorities were in their investigations. Frankly, departments don’t always see crashes like this as a high priority. This can leave officers in an awkward position, as they may not have enough time or the right equipment to consider complex possible factors. Vehicle defects, road hazards, medical conditions, missing signage or lighting, hit and runs, tire failure—these are rarely as straight-forward as some of the more common factors relating to possible driver error. That’s why I get a lot of calls from folks who feel authorities swept their crash aside or otherwise jumped to conclusions without hearing their side of the story. Perhaps authorities here were more thorough, but it would be far from the first time giving a serious accident proper attention required more thorough independent investigations.
