Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle accidents like this, it often surprises people how little attention they get. The unfortunate reality is a lot of departments see them as a low priority. That means officers may not be given the time or tools needed to investigate the crash thorough. This can lead to important details slipping through the cracks.

For example, did the vehicle have any defects? Did airbags and seatbelts function properly? Did a tire blow out? Did the driver experience a medical emergency? Are there issues with the roadway, such as missing lights or signage? Have authorities looked for security cameras at nearby businesses or residences? Did they go through the proper channels to pull the victim’s cellphone or GPS data?

I’ve been handling serious single-vehicle accident cases for over thirty years now. It would shock people to see how often details like these slip through the cracks simply because no one is looking for them. Perhaps authorities here have been more thorough, and they’ve been able to provide the victim’s loved one with satisfying answers about what happened. However, if they’ve left doubts and unanswered questions, it would be far from the first time that a crash like this required more thorough independent investigations.
