UPDATE (July 15, 2024): Additional public details from authorities identified one of the victims as 56-year-old Gloria Moreno. Gloria Moreno was reportedly the driver of the SUV hit head-on in the second collision following the one that injured Krystal Araiza and Clarissa Longoria.

At this time, details show that the Chrysler driver was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the accident, possibly due to alcohol. If evidence proves that to be true, did authorities look into where that alcohol came from? Having a driver here allegedly doing so much wrong might distract from the reality that there could be an accomplice to all of this: a negligent alcohol provider.

Simply put, a crash involving alcohol at 3:00 a.m. usually involves someone who was drinking at a bar. If it’s found that a bar or similar establishment over-served someone who was obviously intoxicated, it opens the alcohol provider up to potential consequences. This can include criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and even liability if it results in people getting hurt.

Unfortunately, this is not an area of the law that gets much attention. I’ve handled hundreds of liquor liability cases against negligent alcohol providers, and authorities generally just want someone to file charges against. If they have a drunk driver to charge, they tend to move on. Meanwhile, there could be a negligent alcohol provider in the community who broke the rules and is continuing to operate without facing any kind of consequences. When there are clear legal avenues to hold them accountable, would it be right to let them off the hook?
