Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to motorcycle wrecks, there’s always a concern about how investigations were handled. To be rather blunt, a lot of people assume the worst of motorcyclists, so people tend to jump to conclusions about a crash before they actually have any of the facts.

Authorities aren’t immune to this bias. In fact, I’ve had cases where independent investigations showed authorities completely misinterpreted or ignored clear evidence that showed the rider was a victim of factors beyond their control. Sometimes, that’s what it takes to keep the story straight. At the end of the day, bias can only go so far when there is clear evidence to counter it, and that requires investigators who prioritize facts over their own preconceived biases.

So if authorities here were thorough and let the facts tell the story, they may have given a fair accounting of what went wrong here. Otherwise, though, there could still be more to this story.
