Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Believe it or not, a large portion of calls our firm gets concern events like what’s described here—two vehicles crash, one driver is dead, and there isn’t much clear information available to the public. It’s not that these crashes are particularly unique in the challenges they present. Rather, if a victim isn’t around to tell their side of the story, families want to know someone is going to do that in the victim’s place. But authorities don’t always have the time, tools, or training to conduct investigations beyond the crash scene, which can result in incomplete or unclear crash reports. Naturally, a family left with unanswered questions will want to know how to fill in those gaps.

That’s why members of my profession and the authorities themselves often rely on independent accident reconstructionists. Their purpose is to get as many facts as possible and to let the evidence speak for itself. They don’t have countless other responsibilities pulling their attention away, they have years of experience, and they have state-of-the-art tools to help ensure nothing unusual slips through the cracks. Mechanical issues, tire defects, someone over-served by a bar, road design flaws—common or not, if it’s possible, a victim’s loved ones at least deserve to see it ruled out.

Whatever the end result of those investigations, a family that’s confident they’re getting the whole story is one that can finally find peace of mind.
