Preliminary details rarely tell the whole story, which is why I always take them with a grain of salt. When it comes to motorcycle wrecks, though, it’s best to use a few more grains. Simply put, a lot of people are biased against motorcyclists, and this can negatively impact investigations if those handling the investigations aren’t putting that bias aside.
I’ve had cases where authorities blamed a rider for being reckless, but our independent investigations showed the rider fell victim to factors beyond their control. Mechanical defects, road hazards, tire failure, other reckless drivers, poor signage or lighting, medical conditions—these possibilities are as important to investigate for victims who were on two wheels as they are for victims on four.
So if there are signs authorities here aren’t giving the crash enough attention, or if it seems like they’re just looking for someone to blame, it may take outside investigations to let the evidence speak for itself and represent the facts fairly.
