Childress, TX — August 25, 2023, Frances Woodard and Mary Watts were killed and another person was injured in a car accident on U.S. 287 near Childress.

Preliminary information suggests the incident happened shortly after 1:00 p.m. on the highway outside of town. Investigators say a Toyota heading south along U.S. 287 allegedly failed to yield to a Dodge pickup when entering an intersection. Sources say the Toyota entered the path of the oncoming Dodge, and the two vehicles collided.

Officials confirmed the Toyota driver, 85-year-old Frances Woodard, suffered fatal injuries. Her passenger, 84-year-old Mary Watts, sustained severe injuries and was flown to an area hospital. Watts later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The Dodge driver reportedly had minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
